Close-ended questions
Q1:What did the white people deny Saul's team of?
A: Regular things that you'd have while playing hockey like the privilege of having indoor arenas, heated dressing rooms, consession stands, glasses rinks, scoreboards, and player benches.
Q2: What did they eat when they were sent to the houses? (p.109)
A:Rabbit, beaver, and moose.
Q3: What did Saul be named as at the game against the Kapuskasing Chiefs?
A: ''The games first star''
Q4: What is Saul's Indian reserve team called?
A: The moose
Q5: What team does he get drafted to?
A: Toronto Marlies
Open-ended questions
Q1: Do you think the way the white people treated Saul and his team to be justified? Explain.
A: No, they should have just as many privileges as them no matter what race or background that they are. I think they should all be treated equally and have the same opportunities as the others. People are people and that's how everyone should look at things instead of judging them and being racist.
Q2: Do you think Saul should have fought those guys on the other team when they kept hurting him? (against the Lumber King's) Explain.
A: I think its not right to retaliate when stuff like that happens but at a point it needs to stop and it becomes too much. The constant rough housing would get old after awhile and once both players from the other team took off their gloves and wanted to fight Saul, I think he should've fought them even though its not necessarily his 'style' of game. Another option is that he could've used the anger he had inside him and made himself look like the bigger person by not retaliating and use that inner anger to drive him to score. This sort of thing would be a version of 'karma' and I think that would be beneficial for him.
Q3: When the boys went out after the game to the café and the men said they shouldn't be eating there because they're Indian, do you think that's okay? Do you think its a good idea for them to have a physical fight in order to be able to eat there? Explain.
A: No I definitely don't think that's okay and I don't think its a good idea for them to have to fight in order to eat there. This is racist and I agree with nothing of that sort. Everyone should be able to eat wherever they want whenever they want no matter what race. This sort of racial injustice is not okay in my opinion and they should have just as many rights as the white people do to eat there.
Questions related to relationships
Q1: What kind of relationship do Father Leboutilier and Saul have? How did Saul feel when he saw him in he stands at the game?
A: Obviously Saul has a place for him in his heart because he brought hockey into his life in the first place. Saul could easily see Father Leboutilier as a fatherly figure in my opinion. He's opened up so many opportunities for Saul which have led him to a more enjoyable life. Not only has Saul benefited from this relationship but I think Father Leboutilier has too. I say this because I think Father Leboutilier has something to be very proud of by changing someone's life. Saul was surprised to see him at the game, but after the game it was nice for them to have a good talk and see how things are going for each other.
Q2: What is Saul's relationship with is team like? (The moose)
A: They're close, almost like a family. They go through so much together especially through hard times because they can all relate to all of the things that have to do with racism. They all seem to have each others backs through it all.
Q3: What kind of relationship do Saul and Virgil have?
A: Saul and Virgil are like brothers. In a way he's taking Saul's older brother that he had lost. They talk to each other more than anyone else on the team and they stick up for each other when things are tough.
Q4: Do you this that is right/justified that Saul's new team's (Toronto Marlies) nickname that the fans gave them is ''Rampaging Redskin?''
A: No, I don't think its right at all. It's very racist and demeaning. Nobody should be using any sort of racial slurs because that is not right. They should be called by their team name rather than the racist nickname that they're been given. They should accept them for who they are because they are a group of good hockey players and they shouldn't be judging them on their race they should be judging them on their talent.

Good job on your questions and answers! I agree with the second part of your answer for question 2 of the open ended questions. I think Saul, instead of fighting, should have channelled his anger into playing better and scoring a goal. I don't think snooping down to their level would have benefited him.
ReplyDeleteI liked the questions on relationships because I found that they played a strong role in this section. Saul's relationships with his teammates, the Kelly's and with the general public, played a huge role in how this section unfolded and unfortunately, on Saul going down the path that he went
ReplyDeleteI think theses are great questions! they really show what happens to Saul and his character in the chapters. I most definitely agree with your answer for question number four in the open ended questions. It is most definitely not right that the fans gave him the nickname the " Rampaging redskin" its racist and demeaning one hundred and ten percent. No one should ever be treated the way Saul was treated on the ice because of the color of his skin etc...
ReplyDeleteThank you Brianna! :) I agree with you, I really do think they should be looking at his talent rather then just judging him by the color of his skin because that is harsh and cruel of a person to do.
DeleteThank you sierra and yes I agree with you but for the second option of fighting them, do you think it would be more considered ''snooping down to their level'' or actually standing up for himself? Because like I answered in that question although it isnt his style of game, at some point enough becomes enough....What would you have done if you were in his position?

It is interesting for sure, on one side Saul knows that by fighting, he is doing exactly what the others want him to do and ,in his eyes, would be throwing away his wonderful "vision". However, how is he supposed to play his game when the taunting and cheap shots are endless and only get worse as he succeeds? This would make for an interesting debate. In my opinion, I was kinda happy when I saw Saul finally stand up for himself, especially in a sport where physical retaliation is common and usually allowed, but was the path it set him on worth it? Probably not, but how much better would things have been if he stayed with the Marlies? Another very debatable point.
