Open ended questions:
1.What do you think of the treatment of the children in the school?  Do you think the priests or nuns tell the parents when their children die?
Answer: I think the treatment of the children in the residential school is downright horrible and cruel. No child or person should ever have to go through what thoses children have gone through. I highly doubt that the priests or nuns tell the parents when their children die because to the priests and nuns the children are as Saul said "stock" they grow them for work and when they are no longer are around are replaced with new children. They dont care about the children's family.

2.Do you think it is a good idea that Father Leboutilier has brought hockey into the lives of the older boys and Saul? Do you think that Father Leboutilier will suffer repercussions in the future?
Answer: I think its a wonderful idea that Father Leboutilier has brought hockey into the lives of the boys at the school. It almost gives them some kind of salvation from the horrors of the school. I personally don't think that Father Leboutilier will suffer any repercussions from showing the boys hockey and teaches them about it. He might lose his job but it seems to be very unlikely because he has not done anything extremely horrible since the children (except Saul are still in the school.)

3.Do you think it is somewhat unfair that the girls do not get quite the same salvation that Saul and the boys get with hockey? why or why not?
Answer: I do think it is somewhat unfair that the girls do not get some what of an escape as the boys get with hockey, but yet again maybe in the future a kind, younger nun will come to the school and offer them the same salvation like Father Leboutilier did for the boys at the school.
4.What would you do if you were in Saul's position when the boy on the hockey team broke his ankle? Would you keep your talent hidden or show it and face some sort of repercussion/punishment for it?
Answer: If I had been in Saul's position i would have shown my talent and hoped for the best because either way if Saul had shown it and recieved a punishment or had not shown he would still have to suffer through the horrors of the residential school. In the end i feel like Saul had made the right choice because now he is free of the horrible school system and doing something he truly loves.

Close ended questions on the topic of conflict:

1.Why do the other nuns and priests disprove of some of the things Father Gaston-Leboutilier has brought to the school (ex.hockey)
Answer: Father Leboutilier is a kind man who is nice to the students. Some of the other priests and nuns think that hockey is a savage sport and their goal is to wash the "savage" and Indian from the children. It also brings them joy which is something that the other priests and nuns definitely do not want the children to have in their lives.

2.What conflict occurs when one of the older boys on the hockey team hurts his ankle?
Answer: They need someone to replace him right away and Saul steps up to the plate even though Father Quinney may not allow it.

3.What are the two reasons the other players parents do not want Saul playing on the town's hockey team?
Answer: The parents do not want Saul playing on the hockey team because he is really good so their children are getting less ice time. The second reason is that Saul is Indian and they do not want an Indian child playing with their white children.

  1. Question 2 is a good question!! I think your questions are well thought of so good job! :) I do think that it is a good idea that Father Leboutilier brought hockey into the lives of those boys. Although he may get in a ton of trouble, it would be worth it. I say this because for atleast a couple moments the boys could forget about everything surrounding them (residential school) and actually maybe have a good time. In the boys eyes, he could be seen as some sort of 'hero' and for me, that would be enough to push through with it and I don't see why he would get fired in that sort of situation.

  2. I agree with Katie I think your questions are really well thought out! To add to your 2nd open ended question I agree that it's a great idea to bring hockey to the boys and that it is a good outlet to escape the poor treatment in the school. However I disagree with father Leboutilier getting reprimanded by the others nuns because he too is in high power at the school and it is being done on his own time.

  3. I think that's a great answer sierra! Brianna, with your open-ended question of number 3 I somewhat agree with your answer, but I also think he should have had some sort of thing lined up for the girls. Although its a hard thing to tackle, I think he should've added another team or allowed some girls to play on the boys' team.

  4. I really liked the detail of the answers here. It really helps me get an idea of what your thinking. I liked questions 1 and 3 in particular. Weather or not parents/ guardians are even aware if/ when their children die in residential school is an interesting topic, and although it is something we will never know, how the girls can witness boys getting a bit of happiness, and them none must be very tough.
